CLASS FAQ's
What do I need for class?
To try a class, you will need a good pair of sturdy shoes with a heel. To continue, you will need a pair of character shoes (Capezio, about $45.00) or real flamenco shoes (about $80 and up). You will also need a full skirt (or pants), with a snug top or a leotard. Carmen's Dance Shoes (El Cajon Blvd) carries both character and an entry level flamenco shoe: call ahead 800-854-4318 or 619-287-5787.
You can also try either folklorico shoes or beginner flamenco shoes from El Charro. Folklorico shoes can be easier to get and have a thicker sole, nails in the front, back and heels and hard toe tip. El Charro offers affordable prices for both types, flamenco and folklorico.

Do students perform?
Yes. We have small shows throughout the year (San Diego County Fair, street fairs and special festivals the SD International Nations of Dance) and a formal student recital on an annual or bi-annual schedule.
What is a flamenco class like?
Flamenco dance instruction is based on building an understanding of Spanish flamenco through solid technique. Flamenco dance steps are not named so students need to recognize a step by sight and sound. Kristina introduces beginner flamenco students to a wide variety of steps, while developing style in upper body and braceo (arms), and incorporating knowledge of the cante (singing) and compas (rhythm) through choreographies. Intermediate flamenco students build on complexity, contra-tiempo (counter-time), and speed. Advanced students practice working cuadro-style (solo) to be ready for local shows. All flamenco dance lessons are accompanied by live guitar. Classes are 60 minutes long.
